Police evacuated the school as a precaution. Officers in hazmat suits were on the scene to help reunite students and parents through an organized dismissal, per the police department's Facebook page.

Milford Schools Superintendent Kevin McIntyre explained in a Facebook note what happened and that he would update parents with more information later that afternoon.

A student at Stacy Middle School sprayed mace in the lobby near the library. At the time of the incident, we were not certain what the substance was and Milford Police, Fire, and emergency vehicles were dispatched to the school. The school was evacuated as a precautionary measure. All activities at Stacy Middle School are canceled for the afternoon. Seven students and staff members who were in the area that was sprayed with mace were brought to the hospital for precautionary measures and to be evaluated. I will follow up with an email before 7 pm with more information. Students were not allowed to return to the building to gather their belonings; they will be able to do so tomorrow after the building is cleared. I want to thank the Milford Police and Fire and the emergency service personnel who supported us this afternoon. I appreciate your patience and I understand the fear, unease, and upset these situations can cause. Again, I will provide additional information later this evening.
